About
Kelly Spaihts is a junior Sociology major at Eastern Tsuga College and a member of the Astraea Society. She is the protagonist of Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling, the first book in the Making the Grades series. Kelly is sharp, socially aware, and carries a complicated inner life beneath a composed exterior. Her story is one of escalating entanglement with Professor William Taylor, beginning with a missed quiz and ending somewhere she never anticipated.
Background
Kelly is an active and well-connected member of ETC's social world. She is a member of the Astraea Society, where she has a Big Sister relationship with Cassandra Blake. She is carrying on a secret bathroom hookup arrangement with Mark Rogers, the boyfriend of fellow Astraea sister Stacy Cantrell, and has a complicated history with former affair Bastian Keller.
Before the events of Kelly's Unveiling, Kelly was aware that her Big Sister Cassie had some kind of prior arrangement with Professor William Taylor, though the details were only partially disclosed to her.
Kelly's Unveiling
Kelly misses a pop quiz in Taylor's Psych 250: Sexology: Sexual Deviance or Sexual Culture course and enters a remediation arrangement that escalates through a series of increasingly personal tasks. These include cleaning visits to Taylor's office, a 500-question sexuality assessment, a remote vibrator week, masturbation in his campus office, a deliberately failed quiz retake, and a task at the Astro Club.
The Astro Club task ends badly when Cassie potentially spots Taylor across the bar. Kelly subsequently faces a formal Astraea Society tribunal, pleads guilty, and is sentenced by majority vote to a streak through Strawbridge College. The streak goes badly. Chelsea Zhou, a journalist for the Strawbridge Sentinel, corners Kelly on a bridge and later publishes an article with censored photos.
By the end of her arc, Kelly has ended things with Mark Rogers per her agreement with Taylor. Mark noticed the butt plug and a "Yes, Professor" slip during their last encounter. How much he has pieced together remains an open question.
Cassandra Blake
Kelly's relationship with her Big Sister Cassandra Blake is one of the more nuanced threads in her story. Cassie is aware of more than she has disclosed. She confronted Taylor, protected Kelly, and chose not to expose him upon graduating. What she knows now and whether she stays in Verdant or leaves is unresolved.
Chelsea Zhou
Chelsea Zhou now has Kelly's name, her school, and an article connecting ETC to a secret organization. She is a live threat to Professor William Taylor and a dangling thread heading into the rest of the series.
Personality
Kelly is observant and socially intelligent. She is aware of the power dynamics at play around her even when she does not fully resist them. She is capable of genuine warmth with people she trusts and a carefully maintained composure with everyone else. Her decisions throughout Kelly's Unveiling are rarely simple capitulations — they reflect a person navigating a situation that keeps shifting beneath her feet.
