About

Bastian Keller is a married graduate student at Eastern Tsuga College and Kelly Spaihts's first college affair. The affair preceded the events of Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling and shaped Kelly's emotional landscape in ways that Professor William Taylor would later exploit with considerable precision. Bastian is still on campus with his wife as of the novel's timeline, an ongoing presence that Kelly navigates quietly.

The affair and its aftermath

The affair with Bastian was Kelly's first experience of the particular dynamic she would later encounter with Taylor: an older man in a position of implicit authority, an arrangement operating outside normal social rules, intimacy that carried a built-in expiration date. Bastian was married. The affair was always going to end. Kelly understood this and entered it anyway, which tells its own story about what she was looking for.

When it ended, Kelly found herself unable to open up romantically in the same way again. The experience had taught her something she couldn't quite articulate: that the version of desire she felt most acutely was tied to asymmetry, to the charged atmosphere of something forbidden, to the particular kind of attention an older man pays to a younger woman he has chosen. Normal romantic pursuit, the kind that might lead to something mutual and equal, stopped feeling available to her in the same way. This is part of why she never asked Mark Rogers out before Stacy Cantrell got to him first. The hookup arrangement she and Mark eventually settled into, oral sex only, bathroom meetings at the Roosting Goshawk, no emotional weight, suited the version of herself the Bastian affair had left behind.

The Taylor connection

Professor William Taylor did not create Kelly's susceptibility. He identified it. The 500-question sexuality assessment he administered during her remediation arrangement was, among other things, a diagnostic tool for understanding exactly what a given subject's prior experiences had opened up. In Kelly's case, the Bastian affair had already done significant preparatory work: she had practice submitting to asymmetrical desire, practice compartmentalizing, practice operating in a dynamic with unstated rules. She had also developed a tolerance for emotional risk and a taste for the specific charge of being chosen by someone who had other options and chose her anyway.

Taylor offered all of this in a more structured, more intense, and considerably more sophisticated form than Bastian ever had. The progression from the affair to the independent study was not random. It followed a logic Kelly herself only partially understood.
