About

Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling is the first book in the Making the Grades series by Jasper Flynn, set at Eastern Tsuga College in Verdant, Connecticut. It follows Kelly Spaihts, a junior Sociology major and Astraea Society member, whose life spirals into submission, exhibitionism, and control after she misses a pop quiz in Professor William Taylor's Psych 250: Sexology: Sexual Deviance or Sexual Culture course.

Plot

Kelly Spaihts thought she could charm her way through college. Parties with her Astraea Society sisters, casual flings, and enough effort to keep her grades afloat had always worked. But when a missed quiz in Professor Taylor's Sexology course threatens her grades, she makes a desperate decision that pulls her into a deepening spiral.

What starts with cleaning his condo evolves into something darker. Kelly finds herself wearing a remote-controlled vibrator in public, surrendering at Camera Noctis, and enduring humiliating public tasks that push her limits further with each step. Each escalation deepens her need for Taylor's approval while steadily unraveling her sense of identity.

Outside Taylor's control, Kelly's life is coming apart at the seams. Her secret affair with Mark Rogers, the boyfriend of Astraea Society sister Stacy Cantrell, leaves her torn between guilt and desire. The judgment of her housemates threatens to expose the double life she has carefully constructed. And then there is Bridgette Hutchinson, the quiet perfectionist who seems to see right through Kelly and offers a new kind of temptation Kelly is not ready to face.

Part One

Kelly misses a pop quiz in Taylor's PSYCH 250 course and enters a remediation arrangement. It escalates through cleaning visits to his condo, a 500-question sexuality assessment, a remote vibrator week, masturbation in his campus office, and a deliberately failed quiz retake. Her Big Sister Cassandra Blake has partially disclosed a prior arrangement with Taylor but stops short of the full truth. Part One ends at the Astro Club, where Kelly completes a task for Taylor and Cassie potentially spots him across the bar.

Part Two

Kelly faces a formal Astraea Society tribunal following the Astro Club incident. She pleads guilty and proposes three punishments: naked chores for a week, a streak through Strawbridge College, or amateur night at Hijinx Gentlemen's Club. The membership votes 17-3-5 for the Strawbridge streak. Kelly expected naked chores to win.

The streak goes badly. Chelsea Zhou, a journalist for the Strawbridge Sentinel, corners Kelly on a bridge. A soccer team carries her naked across the field. She ends up in the trunk of a car belonging to a woman named Bethany. Chelsea publishes an article with censored photos — Kelly's identity protected for now.

Bridgette's presence becomes increasingly significant in this section. Her growing confidence and dominant nature challenge Kelly's perceptions and pull them toward an unexpected connection.

CLASSIFIED

Characters

  • Kelly Spaihts — protagonist; junior Sociology major; embarks on a journey of self-discovery and submission navigating the manipulative dynamics of her arrangement with Taylor
  • Professor William Taylor — antagonist; charismatic and manipulative psychology professor whose secret psychosexual study uses Kelly as its central subject
  • Bridgette Hutchinson — Kelly's reserved Astraea Society sister whose growing confidence and dominant nature challenge Kelly's perceptions and draw them into an unexpected connection; introduced for the novel
  • Mark Rogers — Kelly's past romantic partner and a figure tied to her history of risky behavior; influences her self-reflection and evolving identity; introduced for the novel
  • Cassandra Blake — Kelly's Astraea Society Big Sister; balances loyalty and concern while subtly steering Kelly through the society's traditions and punishments
  • Chelsea Zhou — bold and relentless student journalist from Strawbridge College who probes into Kelly's public exploits, threatening to expose deeper truths

Key themes

  • Institutional power and academic authority as tools of manipulation
  • The gap between what Kelly understands is happening and what she permits to happen
  • Submission as a form of self-discovery rather than pure victimhood
  • The Hemlock Veil as a subtle environmental factor — never foregrounded, always present
  • The Astraea Society as a parallel power structure with its own demands on Kelly's compliance

Background

Kelly's Unveiling grew from roots on the choose-your-path erotic story site CHYOA, where Jasper Flynn's Making the Grades story offered readers a choice between three characters: Kelly, Allie, or Heather. Kelly's CHYOA story was left unfinished after her streak across Strawbridge College's campus. That section ultimately made up roughly one third of the published novel, with the remaining two thirds written new for this edition.

The rewrites were significant. Key additions and changes included:

  • Kelly's sorority became a Society
  • The history of Orders and Societies was invented
  • The town of Verdant and its history were created
  • Eastern Tsuga College and its history were created
  • The supernatural elements — including The Hemlock Veil — were added
  • Kelly's background was fully developed
  • Professor Taylor's background was fully developed
  • Mark Rogers was introduced, including his history with Kelly
  • Bridgette Hutchinson was introduced

Connections to the broader SSU

Kelly's Unveiling establishes the foundational tone and mechanics of the Making the Grades series. The Hemlock Veil operates in the background throughout. Camera Noctis appears directly. The Astraea Society and its position on Elysian Road connect Kelly's story to the wider occult ecosystem of Verdant without foregrounding it.
