About

Meghan Kang (b. August 31, 2004) is a sophomore at Eastern Tsuga College, a UX Design major, and Allison Branigan's best friend and dorm roommate. She and Allie met during Hemlock Veil FM first-semester training in Fall 2021 and moved in together as dorm roommates at the start of sophomore year in Fall 2022. She hosts her own show on Hemlock Veil FM.

Meghan chose ETC over more prestigious institutions, a decision consistent with her broader desire to carve her own path outside her parents' expectations. She arrived on campus in September 2023 and asserted her independence immediately, cutting and dyeing her hair pink on her first day. It was a deliberate break from her mother's influence and the beginning of her own story.

Her arc across Making the Grades: Allie's Descent runs closest to Allie's without intersecting it directly, until the end of the novel when she walks into Professor William Taylor's office.

Description

Meghan has short, choppy pink hair cut in a bold style. She has a fair complexion with a blend of Caucasian and Korean features. Her fashion choices are contemporary and edgy, consistent with the deliberate personal reinvention she undertook at the start of college.

Background

Family

Meghan's parents are Caroline Montgomery and Joon-ho Kang. Her mother is from a wealthy traditional Southern family who expected her to marry Jackson Warrington III, a match arranged since Caroline was twelve. Caroline broke the engagement after conceiving Meghan during a secret visit to Joon-ho in Washington D.C. in November 2004. The decision cost Caroline her family's acceptance and left her with unresolved guilt, shame, and a complex relationship with her daughter that she has never fully worked through.

Her father Joon-ho was raised in a conservative Korean family and moved to Washington D.C. for work, where he and Caroline reunited. He tries to instill traditional Korean values in Meghan, creating a relationship that is respectful but emotionally distant due to his emphasis on discipline and cultural identity.

Growing up

Meghan was raised with a blend of Southern American warmth and Korean traditional values, navigating the high and sometimes contradictory expectations of both parents. She grew up aware of her mother's unresolved regrets and the ways those regrets were projected onto her. She chose ETC specifically because it was not the school her mother would have chosen for her.

Personality and traits

Meghan is independent, free-spirited, and more observant than she lets on. She carries a subconscious desire for her mother's understanding even as she actively builds a life outside her mother's expectations. She is loyal, grounded, and the kind of friend who stays close without needing to be at the center of everything.

Her pink hair is not an affectation. It is a declaration. She made it on her first day and has maintained it since.

Role in Making the Grades: Allie's Descent

Meghan becomes the unwitting entry point into Professor William Taylor's awareness of Allison Branigan when she goes to his office on Allie's behalf after Allie misses a PSYCH 250 session. Taylor uses the visit as a lever without Meghan knowing she has given him one.

Her arc runs parallel to Allie's across the novel, close enough to observe without being inside it. She is the person Allie is most likely to protect from the truth of what she is involved in. By the end of the novel she walks into Taylor's office. What happens next has not been established in canon.

Key relationships

Allison Branigan

Allison Branigan is Meghan's best friend and dorm roommate. Their friendship began at Hemlock Veil FM training in freshman year. Meghan is the person Allie is closest to and the person least aware of the full picture of what Allie is involved in across the novel.

Marty Cavendish

Marty Cavendish has been pursuing Allie since freshman year. Allie suspects he may actually have feelings for Meghan and is using proximity to Allie to get closer. Whether this is accurate has not been established in canon.

Professor William Taylor

Meghan goes to Professor William Taylor's office on Allie's behalf early in the novel. She has no awareness of the arrangement that develops from that office visit. She walks into his office again at the novel's end under circumstances not yet established in published canon.

Caroline Montgomery

Meghan's relationship with her mother is characterized by love, tension, and a long-running struggle for mutual understanding. Caroline projects her own unfulfilled aspirations onto Meghan and is unhappy with choices that mirror her own pursuit of independence. The pink hair was in part a message to her mother. Caroline received it.
