About
Hemlock Veil FM is the student-run campus radio station of Eastern Tsuga College. Its name is a direct in-universe reference to The Hemlock Veil, the supernatural spell that has shaped Verdant for centuries. Whether the station was named knowingly, ironically, or purely for aesthetic reasons has not been established in canon. New hosts must complete a three-week training period in their first semester before being assigned a slot.
Known shows and hosts
- Cornflake Girl (8-10 p.m.) - hosted by Allie Branigan, an English sophomore and Making the Grades: Allie's Descent protagonist
- Unnamed show (10 p.m.-midnight) - hosted by Meghan Kang, a UX Design sophomore and Allie's best friend and roommate
Allie and Meghan met during Hemlock Veil FM's first-semester training in Fall 2021, their freshman year. They bonded instantly and became close friends before eventually becoming roommates. By Spring 2023, when Making the Grades: Allie's Descent is set, both have been hosting for multiple semesters.
Marty Cavendish, a member of the Order of Aetherion, also hosts a novelty and comedy music show on the station, described as inspired by Dr. Demento.
The name
The station's name is confirmed in-universe as an intentional reference to the Hemlock Veil. Someone at ETC named it, knowing the Veil's rumored history. Whether that person understood the Veil to be literally real or simply found the mythology compelling has not been established.
Connection to the SSU
Hemlock Veil FM is a key setting in Making the Grades: Allie's Descent, serving as the social and emotional anchor for Allie and Meghan's friendship. Their shared radio identity is one of the foundations of their relationship. The station is also where Marty Cavendish makes contact with Allie, connecting her story to the Order of Aetherion thread.
