About

Haley Wegner is a freshman at Eastern Tsuga College and co-captain of the newly revived ETC cheerleading club. She is the protagonist of Comply, the visual novel set in Fall 2024. Early in her freshman year, Margot Delacroix places The Anklet of Inevitable Accord on her, following a shoplifting incident at Delacroix's Tomes and Treasures. The Anklet compels Haley to tell the truth and comply with verbal requests. She is aware of its effects throughout the story.

Haley navigates freshman year at ETC under two simultaneous supernatural pressures: the ambient influence of The Hemlock Veil, which lowers inhibitions across the entire town unconsciously, and the Anklet's targeted compulsion, of which she is fully conscious. The two forces compound each other.

Description

No physical description has been established in canon.

Background

Haley previously served as Cheer Captain at Cordish High School. Her cheerleading background is central to her arrival at ETC as she was instrumental in founding the revived cheerleading club alongside McKenzie Walsh, Whitney Cavendish, and Becky Morin. The 2024 revival is freshmen-only, the result of multiple failed revival attempts following the cheerleading ban ETC imposed in the 1980s after an incident with Strawbridge College.

Personality and traits

Haley carries her high school identity into college intact and largely unexamined. She was Cheer Captain at Cordish High and arrived at ETC expecting the same social position to transfer automatically. She wants to be seen as the best by her peers, is comfortable using her status and social leverage to get what she wants, and can be dismissive or bullying toward those she perceives as beneath her or in her way.

She is conceited in a way that reads as confidence until it doesn't. Her drive to lead, to be recognized, and to stay on top is genuine and not without skill. She is a capable cheerleader and a natural organizer. But the line between competitive and manipulative is one she crosses without much friction.

The Anklet of Inevitable Accord is a particular kind of punishment for someone like Haley. A person accustomed to controlling how she is perceived, managing what others know about her, and deploying charm and pressure as social tools suddenly cannot lie and cannot refuse. The compulsion does not change who she is. It strips away the mechanisms she uses to protect it.

Role in Comply

Haley is the central figure of Comply. The story follows her freshman year at ETC under the compulsion of The Anklet of Inevitable Accord, placed on her by Margot Delacroix following a shoplifting incident at Delacroix's Tomes and Treasures.

The specific circumstances of how Margot places the Anklet on Haley and the full arc of Haley's story have not been established in publicly available canon. Comply is currently in development.

Key relationships

Margot Delacroix

Margot Delacroix is Haley's antagonist in Comply. Margot places the Anklet on Haley and is the source of the compulsion that drives the story. Margot's specific motivation for targeting Haley has not been established in canon.

Whitney Cavendish

Whitney Cavendish is Haley's co-captain on the ETC cheerleading squad. Whitney's team at East Willingham High School defeated Haley's Cordish High team in the 2023 conference finals, establishing a prior rivalry. The two set aside that rivalry to co-found the ETC squad together.

McKenzie Walsh and Becky Morin

McKenzie Walsh and Becky Morin are founding members of the cheerleading squad alongside Haley. McKenzie is a fellow Cordish High alumna. The four women form the founding core of the revived club.
