About
Chelsea Zhou is a student journalist at Strawbridge College and reporter for the Strawbridge Sentinel. She is working on a series about kink culture on college campuses, approved by her editor, and wants Kelly Spaihts as the series kick-off subject. Bold, persistent, and strategic, Chelsea is one of the most consequential secondary characters in Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling. By the end of the novel she is in possession of information that could unravel Professor William Taylor's operation at Eastern Tsuga College.
Chelsea does not operate in isolation. Her faculty advisor, Dr. Bruce McKinney, has spent over 20 years pursuing a conspiracy theory about House Subconium and Verdant. Chelsea's story is the most concrete lead that crusade has produced in years. Whether Chelsea fully understands how her work fits into McKinney's larger agenda remains unclear in the canon.
Description
Chelsea communicates in an informal, direct texting style. She presented at the Strawbridge streak wearing a flat cap marked PRESS, red pigtails, oversized glasses, and a safari vest. She describes her journalistic approach as unbiased: no kink-shaming in the article.
Personality
Chelsea is persistent, unbiased, and strategic. She moves quickly, identifies leverage, and does not back off. Her decision to publish a censored version of the story rather than the full account suggests she is playing a longer game. She is holding something back, and that restraint is as significant as what she published. She described her approach to Kelly directly: no kink-shaming in the article.
Role in Kelly's Unveiling
Chelsea first appears during Kelly's streak across the Strawbridge College campus. She corners Kelly on the bridge over the Blue Spruce River, documents what she sees, and subsequently publishes a piece in the Strawbridge Sentinel with censored photos. Kelly's identity is protected in the published version. Chelsea agrees to say Kelly is a Strawbridge student and not mention ETC.
The article is not an isolated piece. The Sentinel, under McKinney's oversight, has been publishing material about Verdant and House Subconium for over two decades. Chelsea's piece is grounded in direct firsthand contact and represents the most current and concrete evidence that crusade has produced.
Chelsea is more active in Book Two than her brief Book One appearance suggests. She tracks Kelly beyond the streaking photos, learns her school and first name, and knows about the Astraea party, possibly through sources or educated guessing. She successfully pressures Kelly into agreeing to an interview. Taylor explicitly told Kelly not to speak to reporters. Kelly agrees to meet Chelsea anyway, without telling Taylor. It is the first significant act Kelly takes behind Taylor's back.
In Book Three, Kelly meets Chelsea for coffee and reveals the vibrator, the theater, and the spanking, while protecting Taylor's identity throughout.
What Chelsea knows
By the end of Kelly's Unveiling, Chelsea holds:
- Kelly's full name
- Kelly's school
- A published article connecting ETC to organized secretive activity
- Censored photos from the streak
- Direct personal contact with Kelly across multiple meetings
- Details Kelly disclosed at their coffee meeting, with Taylor's identity still protected
Taylor is aware Chelsea exists. The NDA he introduces in Allie's arc is a direct lesson learned from the Chelsea situation.
Dr. Bruce McKinney
Chelsea's faculty advisor at the Strawbridge Sentinel is Dr. Bruce McKinney, a journalism professor at Strawbridge College. McKinney has spent over 20 years publishing articles promoting conspiracy theories about House Subconium and Verdant. His files date back decades and reportedly name the founder of Astraea House. He applied for a position at Eastern Tsuga College approximately 30 years ago and was rejected. He achieved tenure at Strawbridge before beginning his crusade, making legal challenges to his work impossible. ETC dismisses him officially as "Strawbridge College's eccentric and imaginative professor of so-called journalism."
McKinney's interest in Chelsea's story is not passive faculty oversight. Chelsea's encounter with Kelly and the resulting Sentinel article represent the most actionable material his crusade has produced in years. Whether Chelsea is fully aware of how her advisor is directing her work toward his own long-running agenda has not been established in canon.
