About

The Astraea Society is the oldest women's organization at Eastern Tsuga College and one of the most socially influential organizations in Verdant. Named for Astraea, the Greek goddess of justice, innocence, purity, and precision, the society reformed under its current name after ETC banned Greek-letter organizations in the late 1970s. It relocated off-campus to Astraea House on Elysian Road, rebranded, and established itself under the Pantheon Pact framework. Membership carries significant social weight at ETC. Sisters are connected through a formal structure of rituals, obligations, and shared secrets that extend well beyond a typical campus organization.

Purpose and structure

The Astraea Society functions as the successor to ETC's oldest sorority. Its stated purposes are academic mentorship, community service, and sisterhood. Its actual culture is considerably more layered. The society maintains a formal Big Sister system pairing senior members with newer ones, a tribunal system for member conduct, a no-phones policy at all events, and a set of traditions both documented and rumored that bind members to the organization in ways that persist beyond graduation.

The society operates under the Pantheon Pact, which gives it autonomous internal governance. Matters of member conduct are handled internally through the tribunal system rather than through university channels. This is both a protection for members and a mechanism of control.

The tribunal system

Astraea tribunals are held in the candlelit basement of Astraea House, presided over by senior members with the full membership present. A member facing discipline pleads guilty or not guilty. If guilty, she proposes three possible punishments. The full membership votes on which is enacted. The system places the burden of accountability on the individual while reinforcing the society's collective authority.

In Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling, Kelly Spaihts faces a tribunal following the Astro Club incident. She proposes naked chores for a week, a streak through Strawbridge College, or amateur night at Hijinx Gentlemen's Club. The membership votes 17-3-5 for the Strawbridge streak. Kelly had expected naked chores to win.

Traditions and culture

Known and rumored Astraea traditions include Welcome Dinners at the start of each semester, Heritage Week celebrating the society's founding and values, secretive Initiation Ceremonies, Academic Support Circles, Big Sister and Little Sister pairing, Sisterhood Retreats, and a No-Phones Party Policy enforced by hired security from the Verdant Vigilant Vanguards at especially raucous events.

The Strip Relay is a rumored annual tradition rotating across all seven Elysian Road houses. Its existence is not officially acknowledged.

Membership

Membership is capped at 35 sisters with approximately 20 living in the house per semester. Eligibility is typically sophomore and above, though exceptional freshmen are occasionally invited. New members are paired with Big Sisters who serve as mentors throughout their time in Astraea.

Known members include:

  • Kelly Spaihts — junior; Sociology major; protagonist of Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling
  • Cassandra Blake — senior; Kelly's Big Sister; prior arrangement with Taylor; confronted him and chose not to expose him; graduated
  • Bridgette Hutchinson — Kelly's foil and eventual dominant partner; leaving the house the semester after Kelly's arc
  • Stacy Cantrell — member; dating Mark Rogers of the Order of Kratos
  • Bethany — Party Ambassador; active organizer; owns the 1976 paddle
  • Elisha — Party Ambassador; co-organizer
  • Janet — sophomore pledge
  • Delaney — newer sister
  • Darla — quiet sister; believed to have an online relationship of uncertain authenticity
  • Shelia Carpenter — former member 1998-2001; origin of the Shelia the Pervert house legend

Headquarters

The society operates out of Astraea House, one of seven mansions on Elysian Road. The house has 13 bedrooms accommodating approximately 26 sisters. Its founding governance charter requires the original interior and exterior to be preserved as much as reasonably possible, which is why it is better maintained than most of the other Elysian Road properties. The art deco basement with its burl walnut paneling, marble floor, jade and ebony flourishes, and large central pentacle is used for tribunal proceedings and ritual. The backyard terminates directly at Charter Oak Forest.

Relationship to the occult

The Astraea Society's position on Elysian Road places it among organizations with documented connections to occult practice. Whether the society itself participates in occult ritual or whether the pentacle in its basement is ceremonial or functional has not been established in canon. What is clear is that the society exists within the broader supernatural ecosystem of Verdant and is not entirely insulated from it.

The society's name, Astraea the last immortal to leave Earth at the end of the Golden Age, may carry thematic weight in the SSU beyond decoration. Whether this is intentional or coincidental has not been established.

Relationship to House Subconium

The overlap between the Astraea Society and House Subconium's inner circle has not been fully mapped in canon. Some Astraea members are aware of Camera Noctis. The society's basement pentacle predates the society's occupancy of the house. The founding family connection through the Verdant Preservation Society Treasurer's daughter suggests the society's roots in Verdant's occult infrastructure may be deeper than its official founding implies.
