About
Comply is a visual novel set in the Subconium Shared Universe, developed by Jasper Flynn. It is set one year after the events of Making the Grades, in Fall 2024, on the campus of Eastern Tsuga College and the streets of Verdant, Connecticut. Where Making the Grades centers on psychological manipulation through institutional authority, Comply introduces a supernatural compulsion as its central mechanism — the Anklet of Inevitable Accord.
Plot
Haley Wegner is a freshman at Eastern Tsuga College whose life is upended when Margot Delacroix curses her with the Anklet of Inevitable Accord. The Anklet compels truth-telling and compliance with requests. Unlike the ambient and unconscious influence of The Hemlock Veil, the Anklet's effects are targeted and personal — Haley is aware of what is happening to her.
The story follows Haley navigating life at ETC under the Anklet's compulsion, surrounded by a cast of fellow freshmen who are largely unaware of the deeper history of Verdant or House Subconium.
Setting
Comply takes place in Fall 2024, one year after the events of Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling. The characters and organizations from that series exist in Comply's world as background:
- Professor William Taylor is still at ETC
- The Astraea Society still operates
- Camera Noctis is still running
Comply's protagonist and central cast are freshmen — a deliberate contrast to the more established world Kelly inhabits in Making the Grades. Margot Delacroix is the thread connecting Comply directly to the occult machinery beneath Verdant.
Characters
- Haley Wegner — protagonist; ETC freshman; cursed with the Anklet of Inevitable Accord by Margot Delacroix
- Margot Delacroix — antagonist; owner of Delacroix's Tomes and Treasures; House Subconium legacy member; places the Anklet on Haley
- McKenzie Walsh — supporting character; details not yet established in canon
- Whitney Cavendish — supporting character; details not yet established in canon
- Becky Morin — supporting character; details not yet established in canon
The Anklet of Inevitable Accord
The Anklet of Inevitable Accord is the central supernatural mechanism of Comply. It compels its wearer to tell the truth and comply with requests. Haley is conscious of its effects — unlike the residents of Verdant who are unconsciously influenced by the Hemlock Veil.
The Anklet and the Darewright Jar share a magical origin, though they operate differently and are distinct artifacts.
Position in the SSU
Comply sits one year after Making the Grades in the SSU timeline. It introduces a new protagonist and a new central cast while drawing on the established world of Verdant and ETC. It deepens the role of Margot Delacroix as a figure of occult authority and brings House Subconium's influence into direct contact with a protagonist for the first time.
Canon notes
- The full cast of Comply beyond the four named characters has not been established
- The specific circumstances of how Margot places the Anklet on Haley have not been fully detailed in public canon
