"Excitare dormientem mentem."

To awaken the sleeping mind.

Verdant, Connecticut has two histories.

The first is the one the Chamber of Commerce promotes. A quaint New England college town. Progressive, welcoming, a safe harbor among the hemlocks. Ghost tours on Friday evenings. A witch-themed restaurant south of Main Street. The kind of place that makes visitors feel they have stumbled onto something genuinely strange.

They are not wrong. They are simply seeing the costume.

This wiki documents the second history. The one preserved by House Subconium and recorded in the diaries of Eleanor Ashburne. The one that explains why Verdant has always been the way it is, why its college campus operates at the edge of ethical research, why its residents give themselves permissions they would not grant elsewhere, and why a fertility spell cast in 1667 still shapes every life within the town's borders.

The town

Verdant, Connecticut was founded on October 13, 1662 by Eleanor Ashburne and a group of witch trial refugees fleeing persecution. Five years later, Eleanor cast a fertility spell on Beltane that has never fully stopped. Its effects are not dramatic. They are ambient. They lower the threshold between what people want and what they allow themselves to do. Three and a half centuries of residents have experienced this as simply the way things are in Verdant.

The guardian

House Subconium is Verdant's oldest active institution. Some accounts suggest it predates the town's formal founding. Its public face is an exclusive BDSM club. Its actual purpose is to preserve the true history of Verdant, maintain the spell that protects it, and ensure that the objects the Delacroix Family has guarded for nine generations stay out of the wrong hands. So far this has worked. Mostly.

The college

Eastern Tsuga College sits on the edge of Verdant and has absorbed its atmosphere for nearly two centuries. Its motto is "Excitare dormientem mentem." Its faculty are granted unusual latitude. Its students arrive already primed, by Verdant's mythology if not by the spell itself, to be more open, more experimental, more willing to test limits. One professor has noticed this and built a research program around it.

The artifacts

The Delacroix Family has guarded a collection of dangerous objects for three centuries. Two of them are currently in play. The Darewright Jar is circulating on the ETC campus as a drinking game. The Anklet of Inevitable Accord is on Haley Wegner's ankle. The woman who locked them away in 1929 did so specifically so they would never be used again. Her granddaughter made a different decision.
