Eastern Tsuga College (ETC) is a private liberal arts institution located on the edge of Verdant, Connecticut. Its name derives from the Eastern Hemlock trees (Tsuga canadensis) that densely populate the surrounding forests. The college has developed a reputation as one of the most progressive and experimental schools in New England.
Its motto is "Excitare dormientem mentem" — "To awaken the sleeping mind."
Founding and history
Eastern Tsuga College was founded in the mid-1800s. The town of Verdant, where the college is located, had already established a reputation as a haven for the persecuted, having been founded during the Connecticut Witch Trials of the 17th century.
In the 1980s, the college faced significant backlash during the Satanic Panic. Several courses with provocative titles caught national attention, leading to protests from religious groups. Despite the turmoil, ETC rebounded by embracing Verdant's history, positioning itself as a "safe harbor" for the misunderstood.
In the late 1970s, ETC banned all Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities following a series of hazing incidents that resulted in student deaths. The organizations found loopholes, reforming as Orders and Societies with names drawn from Greek mythology.
The Hemlock Veil's influence
The Hemlock Veil subtly affects all faculty and students of Eastern Tsuga, lowering inhibitions and enhancing curiosity and openness. This has allowed darker psychological experiments to flourish — most notably those conducted by Professor William Taylor, who exploits the Veil's effects using psychological manipulation and institutional authority.
