About

Dean Markus Gebhard is the Dean of Eastern Tsuga College and one of its longest-serving institutional figures. He has been at ETC for over forty years, arriving as a faculty member during the Satanic Panic era and rising steadily through the institution to his current administrative role. He is the same Markus Gebhard who taught "Misinformation and Satanic Ritual Abuse" in the early 1980s, the lightning-rod course that brought protesters, investigators, and national media to ETC's campus. That he remained at ETC for four decades and eventually became its Dean says something about the institution's tendency to weather controversy rather than purge its architects.

Description

No physical description has been established in canon.

Background

Gebhard was a faculty member at Eastern Tsuga College during the Satanic Panic of the early 1980s. His course "Misinformation and Satanic Ritual Abuse" was among three singled out by national media and religious groups as evidence of ETC's occult sympathies. The other two were "Friends of the Devil: Johnson's Crossroads to Garcia's Dead," a music history course, and "The New Oral History: Dungeons and Dragons," an oral storytelling course. All three were discontinued during the Panic.

Despite being the most visible target of the controversy, Gebhard was not dismissed. ETC's administration defended him on academic freedom grounds and he remained on faculty through the recovery period, the Verdant Safe Harbor rebrand, and the decades that followed. He rose through the administrative structure and is Dean as of the novel's present timeline.

Personality and traits

Gebhard's personality beyond his institutional role has not been established in canon. His forty-year tenure at ETC and his survival of the Satanic Panic suggest a man who understands how institutions work and how to operate within them without being consumed by them.

Role in Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling

Gebhard appears in Making the Grades: Kelly's Unveiling Book Three as the sender of an email that Professor William Taylor checks, confirming his presence in the current ETC administrative structure. He does not appear directly in any scene. His role in the broader SSU has not been established beyond this reference.

Key relationships
