About

The Verdant Preservation Society was a historic preservation organization in Verdant, Connecticut that operated from at least the late 1940s through the 1970s. Its most significant role in SSU history was its acquisition and attempted stewardship of the seven Elysian Road mansions following their abandonment after the Roarke tragedy in 1929, and the eventual transfer of those properties to Eastern Tsuga College's orders and societies in the late 1970s.

The Elysian Road chapter

In the late 1940s the VPS acquired the seven abandoned Elysian Road mansions, hoping to turn them into a tourist attraction. The project never gained traction, citing competition from the Newport Mansions among other factors. By the 1970s the properties saw fewer than 100 visitors annually. The VPS was desperate to sell but resisted student housing as inconsistent with their preservation mission.

The impasse ended when the VPS President was found decapitated in the basement of what is now Nyx Society House. The murder was never solved. It effectively broke the remaining VPS membership and enabled the transfer of the mansions to ETC's student organizations. The VPS Treasurer oversaw the transfer. Notably, one of the founding members of the Astraea Society was the Treasurer's daughter, which is why Astraea House was converted more carefully than the other properties and why its founding governance charter includes a preservation requirement.
